Brisbane - Land Clearing Campaign Training

Saturday, September 09, 2017 at 08:30 AM · 106 rsvps
AHEPA Hall West End in West End, Australia

Volunteers, members and supporters of The Wilderness Society are invited to attend our free 1-day Land Clearing Campaign training course.

Australia is home to some of the most unique and magnificent nature in the world. Yet, it is one of the worst developed countries for broadscale land clearing – killing tens of millions of native animals (including threatened species) and wiping out endangered forests and woodlands.

Queensland is experiencing one of the worst land clearing crises at the moment, with a GABBA sized area of native bushland being cleared every 3 minutes. Koalas, which are vulnerable to extinction, alone lost over 40,000 hectares of habitat in just two years following the weakening of land clearing controls in 2012.

Land clearing has doubled since the Campbell Newman Government changed land clearing laws in 2013. The answer to one of the state’s greatest environmental challenges is surprisingly simple – strengthen the laws which protect nature.

This unique event will give you an opportunity to learn more about the land clearing campaign, how to get engaged and how to maximise your impact. The trainer will be an international expert in campaigning, the Wilderness Society’s national community organising manager Damian Ogden.

Join us to put our collective power into action to stop the land clearing crisis in Queensland before the end of 2017.

Blue Mountains Meet Your MP Workshop

Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 01:00 PM · 3 rsvps
Junction 142 Community Centre in Katoomba, Australia

You’re invited to a free Effective Meetings With Your MP workshop, which will be held in Katoomba on Saturday 16 September 2017 from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. RSVP below.

Training.jpg

At the Wilderness Society we believe that it is important for a community to be better equipped to engage in the political process and have strong relationships with their local decision makers. We are therefore very excited to invite you to attend our free one-off training workshop: How to Effectively Meet With Your MP.

Meeting with your local member of parliament (MP) can be a great way to engage them in a particular issue. It is also a great way to establish, build and maintain a relationship. MPs need to know the “mood” of their community and you can be a valuable asset to them, just as they can become a valuable asset to you. Having an established relationship with your MP is really helpful when an issue arises that you and your local community feel particularly passionate about.

In this two-hour workshop you will join other members of your community to learn how to have meetings with your MP that actually make a difference.

We will cover everything from how to secure a meeting, how to prepare, what to take with you, what to say in the meeting and, following the meeting, how to have a productive debrief and follow up on commitments made.

Come along and take advantage of this free workshop, which will equip you with all that you need to successfully engage your MP. You do not need to be a member or supporter of the Wilderness Society to attend.
