Is unconventional gas mining and fracking an economic opportunity or a health and environmental calamity? The industry says we should go for it while the current government is actively promoting fracking statewide. On the other hand, the US Environmental Protection Agency confirms fracking causes permanent damage to water sources.
Here in Australia, hundreds of communities have declared themselves ‘gasfield free’ to protect their health, water and environment, resulting in a fracking ban in Victoria. Moratoria are in place in Tasmania and the Northern Territory. Bans and moratoria have also be enacted internationally in New York State, Scotland, France and Germany.
Our public forum will explore this serious issue in the lead up to the State election and will feature:
- Hydrogeologist Dr Ryan Vogwill
- Health academic Professor Melissa Haswell
- Retired Anglican Bishop of Perth, The Right Reverend Bishop Tom Wilmot
Chairing proceedings, ex-Premiere Professor Carmen Lawrence will invite representatives from the major political parties to explain their positions followed by audience questions.
With the election looming with a clear difference of opinion between the major parties, the future of fracking in WA is a question for all of us. Please join the Dean and his special guests for this essential and informative event.
