ABOUT

Citizen science has always been a cornerstone protecting wilderness. Eyes in the bush are essential… searching for massive trees in logging coupes, surveying tagged-out development sites on the South Coast Track, and filming critically endangered wedge-tailed eagles soaring above Lake Malbena. With this and rich dark sky protection in mind, we will be hosting our first dark sky citizen science night on Monday December 16th, 730pm, at the Springs in Wellington Park.

As part of a network of exciting Dark Sky Places in Lutruwita/Tasmania (including a proposed Dark Sky Park in Wellington Park) , the remote corners of the globe’s highest ranked Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area are primed for protection and international recognition as a Dark Sky Sanctuary. A Sanctuary in the Southwest National Park would be the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, and would protect the darkest skies on the island. Just like the Tasmanian Devil and Huon pine, the rich dark skies of this special area are iconic, and of international significance worthy of protection.

Together we can learn and share the skills needed to track and monitor night sky quality, to responsibly survey flora and fauna using appropriate red lights, and to appreciate the unique experience of sitting comfortably in the nocturnal environment The skills will help us to embrace the global move to cease and revert pollution of the night sky, protecting the homes of a raft of species relying on rich dark sky Country.
