We've all seen it!

The ever encroaching urban sprawl is seeing hectare after hectare of urban bushland and important habitat being cleared before our eyes. Our communities are changing, and too often residents (human and non human) don't get a say. It seems that this crisis has now reached breaking point, and something has to give!

As a result, urgent action is required to save Queensland koalas, a species which, while iconic, are threatened with a death by a thousand cuts.  It’s clear that more must be done by our State and Federal representatives.

The final Queensland Koala Expert Panel report (finalised in September 2017) highlights the need to stop habitat loss, the main stressor for Koalas.

The report made some alarming discoveries and proposed key interventions including:

  • A warning of the dramatic declines in koala populations in South East Queensland, including 80 per cent in the Koala Coast area (Gold Coast to Sunshine Coast and west to Ipswich)
  • Singling out deforestation and land clearing as a major cause
  • Koalas could be extinct from these communities within 50 years
  • There is something we can do...but we need to act now!

Join the Albert Valley Wilderness Society, and the Environmental Defenders Office to learn about what the solution looks like.

You will hear from expert speakers from a range of different perspectives, and also have a chance to have your burning questions answered.

We will focus on current planning legislation, why it is failing us, how it can be reformed, and the impacts that these reforms will have on communities in and around the Albert Valley. What's more, just by attending, you will have the opportunity to tell your politicians that urbanisation, urban clearing, and declining koala populations matter to you.

This is a one-off event that simply is a must attend for anyone with an interest in how the greater community develops.

Snacks and drinks will be provided.

We look forward to seeing you there!
