ABOUT
The Wilderness Society Tasmania invites you a 'Citizen Science Weekend' in the Huon Valley!

Date: Saturday 18 October - Sunday 19 October
Location: -42.955729, 146.782060 // https://maps.app.goo.gl/AMnZtmqWGjwqPqnF7

Join us 18/19 October for a weekend in threatened forests in the Huon Valley. The weekend will include a forest bioblitz, forest scouting, night surveys, and dark sky readings.

The forests we will be visiting are some of the last intact areas in the region, are home to giant trees and countless threatened species, and make up the water catchments of wild rivers - the Russell, the little Dennison and more. We will be surveying and scouting the area to collect data to defend these forests, and continue to make the case for their permanent protection.

This is also an opportunity to explore these forests at night - the natural darkness in dense forest is host to all sorts of complex interspecies relationships. Logging operations not only destroy habitat in a physical sense, they also contribute to light pollution in the region that fragments and muddles the ecology of the forest. Not to mention that sneaky log trucks after dark kill threatened species.

Join us to for a night-time spotlighting walk, light trapping of insects, recording animal calls and measuring night sky brightness using custom made equipment. This survey will help us to learn more about what is happening in Lutruwita’s forests at night, and as we will be only a stones throw away from Southwest National Park you can also learn more about the proposal for a Dark Sky Sanctuary for Southwest Sky Country.

BYO sleeping set up (if staying), suitable shoes/clothing/equipment, medications, packed lunch, snacks, water bottle, chair, headtorch, and bowl/cup/cutlery. A communal dinner and breakfast will be provided.
