ABOUT

Are you someone that:

  • Cares deeply about the environment
  • Feel worried that politicians aren't taking enough action on climate change, environmental decline or species loss
  • Want to take action on the things you care about
  • Would like to meet other people who are passionate about the environment

Then we'd love you to join us for a couple of hours writing to the federal minister for the environment and water Tanya Plibersek about our fears and hopes for our environment, climate change and biodiversity. We will give you some tips on how to structure your letter for maximum impact while also making it about something that is meaningful and personal to you. Your personal story is your biggest asset and you do not need to be studying or working in environmental science, your love and passion is enough.

Our team members have different passions for specific species or causes and will be around to help you if you get stuck or just want to have a chat. We will also provide snacks, music and camaraderie because taking action should be fun AND rewarding. No need to bring anything unless you want to, pen and paper will be supplied, however if you prefer to type you can bring a tablet or computer.

You might think writing a letter to a member of parliament is boring, that it won’t achieve much, that it is too hard but a letter, while small, is a way for you to impact the decision of our MP’s who rely on you for their votes. A letter can change a mind, give voice to the voiceless (like our native wildlife) and, when shared, help others find their own voices. It might seem insignificant at first but it is a stepping stone to understanding more about how you can use your community rights to influence the policies you care about.

2019 - 2022 has been a really tough time for all of us, but especially for our native species:

  • The 2019 bushfires devastated 13.4 million hectares much of which was habitat for our native animals.
  • The review of the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act was released, showing in no uncertain terms that it has failed to prevent widespread species loss.
  • Many states have had to deal with some of the worst flooding on record putting further pressure on our wildlife.
  • The State of the Environment report was hidden from us for political gain and shows staggering declines in the environment  across the board, from land clearing, climate change to biodiversity loss.

Many of us have felt alone in our fears, the sheer scope of the problems facing our environment can make us feel as though we are too small, too few to make any sort of difference. But together we are big, together we will make them listen.
