ABOUT

The Wilderness Society and our Places You Love partners have begun our most ambitious campaign ever.

A campaign to replace Australia's largely toothless environmental rules and regulators with a consistent, commonsense plan.

The first step in the plan is to raise awareness around the key failures of the law in media and the community because our current laws fail to protect the things that make Australia a great place to live.

We know Wilderness Society Supporters, businesses, communities and environment protection groups that Australia’s environment laws don’t work, how do we engage, educate and activate new audiences about the failings of our current system to stop deforestation and end the extinction crisis we have in Australia.

At this workshop you will hear from Dr Chris McGrath, a Brisbane barrister practising in environmental law and an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Global Change Institute at the University of Queensland (UQ).

You don't need to become experts in environmental law – but this is an opportunity to build your understand enough to feel comfortable answering a simple question about it when promoting the campaign.

The outcome of the workshops would be for attendees to understand roughly what the current laws are and their weaknesses (EPBC Act which does not include climate change as a trigger for example and absence of clear responsibilities etc.)

Workshop outline

  • A short (5 minute) "basic" explanation of key points relevant to the campaign for new nature laws in a short video format;
  • A longer (1 hour) "intermediate" explanation of key points relevant to the campaign in a workshop format where both Queensland and other states can listen and ask questions.
