What: Design your own unique book cover picture for a book about nature 🍃
How: What makes a good book cover? You choose! We want to see your creative and nature-inspired art & your local Wilderness Society volunteers will choose which cover stands out as the most unique at your school
Why: To help celebrate the Wilderness Society’s annual awards for the best new nature-themed children’s book, we’d like to invite you to design your own book cover! Your School library will also receive one of the following award-winning nature-themed picture book, & you can use this years shortlisted books for inspiration!

For Teachers: This project seeks to develop creative processes and empower young people to consider actions that will lead to a more equitable, respectful and sustainable future. This is tied to the Australian cross-curriculum priority of Sustainability and aligns with the Environment Award for Children’s Literature’s mission of fostering a love of nature in children.
Book Cover drawing competition terms and conditions
The competition promoter is the Newcastle Wilderness Society, 21 Gordon Av Hamilton NSW 2303, ABN 19 069 545 489. Instructions on how to enter and details of prizes form part of the terms and conditions.
Submissions: Students who wish to participate can submit one book cover illustration for an unspecified/ general book about nature. The corresponding Wilderness Society-designed illustration template has been provided to the select schools partaking in this competition.
The template can be completed in full, and either submitted to the school office or electronically by email to [email protected] with the subject line drawing competition.
Criteria
- Entry is open to students of local primary schools in Newcastle and Charlestown the Newcastle Wilderness Society approaches. The immediate families of employees of the Wilderness Society and the Environment Award for Children’s Literature and their related companies and agencies cannot enter this competition.
- The competition opens at 9.00 am on Monday, 29 August and closes 5:30 pm Friday, 9 September 2022. Any entries received after this date will be ineligible for judging
- The winning entry (one winner per school) from each school will receive a copy of one of the shortlisted books from the 2022 Environment Award for Children’s Literature Picture Book entries. Each participating school will be gifted one book to the school library. Honourable Mentions will win a Wilderness prize pack of Wilderness Society stickers.
- Only one entry per student is permitted
- Students complete all fields on the competition template in full
- Entries will be judged based on the following criteria: Comprehension, Creativity, Composition, Use of colour
- Entries will be judged by members of the Newcastle Wilderness Society. The judges’ decision is final, and no correspondence will be entered into.
- Judging will take place on the week beginning 12 September
- The winners’ schools will be notified by phone no later than 5 pm September 23 2022
- The Wilderness Society Inc. reserves the right to request proof of identity, proof of age and/or proof of entry validity to claim a prize. Proof of identification, age and entry considered suitable for verification is at the discretion of the Wilderness Society Inc. In the event that a winner cannot provide suitable proof, the winner will forfeit the prize in whole, and no substitute will be offered
- Prizes will be distributed to the winners via their school offices
- Prizes are not transferable or exchangeable and cannot be redeemed for cash
- All entries and any copyright subsisting in the entries become and remain the property of the Wilderness Society who may publish or cause to be published any of the entries received for the campaign and promotional purposes.
