This training introduces the theory and practice of community organising - how we bring people together to make change - and how we organise at the Wilderness Society.
Community organising is an approach to social change that builds power by bringing people with shared interests together to take collective action. It recognises that lasting change comes from coordinated groups rather than isolated individuals, and focuses on shifting power relationships that underlie social and environmental problems.
Rather than trying to persuade decision-makers through arguments alone, organising seeks to make change politically necessary by applying collective pressure. As Frederick Douglass noted, power only concedes in response to demands.
Key principles of community organising include building and strengthening organisations, developing clear strategies to move from the current situation to desired outcomes, and using values based communication such as one-to-one 'relational conversations' and story telling.
