Habitat loss is the leading cause of the population declines of koalas in Queensland. In addition, the fragmentation of koala habitat from clearing for sprawling development exposes koalas to the compounding threats of disease, greater chances of car strikes and dog attacks.

Statewide, Queensland has lost over 43% of koala numbers and in the Koala Coast east of Brisbane, there has been an 80% decline in numbers. It is estimated that the species will go extinct by 2050 unless action is taken to reverse population declines.

It’s unbelievable to see that koala habitat is still being bulldozed at huge scales around the state.  If the government is serious about halting the koalas slide to extinction then they must stop the bulldozing of koala habitat.

How can they be saved?

We will lose the battle to prevent koalas from going extinct unless the Queensland Government properly implements all recommendations of the Expert Panel Report, in particular, those relating to habitat protection.

To make sure they do, we have organised, along with the Queensland Conservation Council, a 'Koala Meet Your MP Webinar' with wildlife carers from Southeast Queensland and Wilderness Society supporters involved in the koala campaign. Different speakers will talk about the need for strong protections for koalas in Queensland and run a training session for you to lobby your own MP.

Together we will make sure the Queensland government takes real action to protect this iconic species everyone loves! It is a great way for anyone to make a contribution, no matter your age or experience, and to meet new like-minded people.
