Wildlife carers are struggling to cope with mounting numbers of sick and injured animals in south-east Queensland saying the destruction of bushland is to blame.
Koala populations are down by almost 50% right across the state. In South East Queensland it's even worse—down 80%. We need a Koala Conservation Strategy now.
The QLD government must act now and release the Koala Conservation Strategy and include in it all recommendations from the Koala Expert Panel report.
Will you come along to Queensland Parliament House on 5 September to deliver thousands of petitions calling for urgent action?
Almost two years ago, the The Queensland Government’s own commissioned Koala Expert Panel released a report to provide the Queensland Government with recommendations on priority actions to address the relentless decline in koalas in South-East Queensland . That was a result of your support; you signed petitions, attended events and met with decision makers. Yet the Government is still delaying.
The Panel determined that the clear evidence of catastrophic declines in koala populations in the Koala Coast area demonstrates an urgent need for policy change to ensure the long-term persistence of the koala. The Panel noted the need for increased protection of koala habitat across Queensland.
The panel’s recommendations are now almost two years old and we are still waiting on urgent action and interventions from the Queensland Government to address the greatest threat facing koalas, habitat loss and fragmentation.
That’s why we are holding an action with our allies at Queensland Conservation Council to call on the Government to act urgently to save koala habitat.
