14,000 hectares of native forest are destroyed annually in NSW, with that loss of habitat contributing hugely to species extinction. Over 40 species of plants and animals have been added to the “threatened” list this year alone.
Still the logging continues, even in bushfire-ravaged areas and, shockingly, at tax-payers expense (the Forestry Corporation is state-owned and subsidised). The timber is largely used for wood-chip and cheap paper-making.
After many years of protest, the Victorian Government has recently brought forward its deadline to stop chopping down publicly owned native trees. Only NSW and Tasmania are still “dragging the chain”.
On the bright side, National Tree Day is coming up. The Wilderness Society's Sydney East team has joined forces with Waverley Council and others in a community event.
Come along to talk to us about Community Rights in Environmental Decision-making (CRED) and deforestation in NSW.
