ABOUT
The Wilderness Society invites you to a 'Threatened Forest Open Day' at the Lonnavale Forests of the Huon Valley.
Date: 11am-3pm, Saturday 13 December
Location: -42.954758, 146.783504 // https://maps.app.goo.gl/1EnTa2aXW3NdT1s88
The Lonnavale forests hold some of the largest trees in the world. The now famous 'Grove of Giants' was protected through people power in recent years, yet logging is still planned throughout the area, which is important breeding habitat for critically endangered swift parrot. Swiftys are returning to Lonnavale to breed right now, and have been recorded at areas scheduled to be logged this summer.
Join us on Saturday 13 December for a day the Lonnavale Forests as we make the case for their permanent protection. As always, the day will include guided forest walks through an imminently threatened rainforest, ecology activities, and a panel discussion to finish. BYO packed lunch, water, and suitable shoes/clothing/equipment. We highly recomend that anyone unsteady on their feet bring hiking poles.
For those driving - please take Lonnavale Road from Judbury, remembering to turn right after the bridge over Russell River to remain on Lonnavale Road. At the end of the road, turn left up Link Road - the destination is at the top of the hill. This road is 2WD friendly, but please drive slowly up the hill - there are some pots holes and rocks. DO NOT drive up Dennison Road and come up Link Road from the southern side, as the road is in very bad condition.
We are excited to announce speakers for the day!
