ABOUT

TWS Tas/Lutruwita and GRANT invite you to our sixth Threatened Forest Open Day of the year!

Join us on Sunday 17 November for a day in the forest near Lonnavale - exact location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/bWfHPMCCSDFSB8qt5

The forest we will be visiting sits at 750m above sea level on Russell Ridge, north of Lonnavale. At this altitude the eucalypts are restricted to <12m circumference, but the yellow gums (eucalyptus johnstonii) and gum-topped stringybarks (eucalyptus tasmaniensis) are still upwards of 300 years old. There are also stunning old myrtles, celery top pines, and a diversity of moss and fungi, and on each visit thus far we have been watched over by yellow-tailed black cockatoos.

As always, the day will include guided forest walks through an imminently threatened forest. There will also be live music, ecology activities, and a panel discussion . BYO packed lunch, water, and suitable shoes/clothing/equipment. We are expecting some rain, so please ensure to bring a wet weather clothes.
We have endeavoured to make the track as accessible as we can - but it is important to note that this is still a makeshift track through a forest. There is uneven footing and some sizeable logs to step over. We advise people who are unsteady walking to bring hiking poles. There is 2wd access, but please drive carefully on gravel roads. Allow some extra time and aim to arrive and be ready to get walking at 11am.

Speakers will include local campaigner and former Huon Valley councillor Jenny Cambers-Smith, grassroots forest campaigner Danny Carney, and Wilderness Society Tasmania Campaings Manager Alice Hardinge. The panel will be MC'd by Hughie Nicklason

Tasha Zappala will also be playing some transcendent acoustic melodies for us to finish.

Limited free transport will be available from 130 Davey Street, Nipaluna/Hobart - please email [email protected] for more details.

Schedule:

11:15am - Walks start

This event will be held on stolen Palawa land. We acknowledge and pay our respects to the many generations of staunch warriors and activists whom have been fighting for Country since colonisation began. Sovereignty was never ceded.
