ABOUT

birds eye view of Alcoa's clearing in Jarrahdale forest with text over top that reads "when Alcoa destroys our forests they don't come back. Ever". There is also the EFM logo and website in the corners

The Wilderness Society WA’s Campaign Manager, Tim Clifford, is completing a 55km walk from Jarrahdale to Parliament House for the rally in an effort to raise much needed funds for our native forests and awareness of the need to urgently protect them.

Three of the largest bauxite mines on earth are located in one unique forest in Western Australia and now mining operations aim to scale-up drastically. Alcoa alone is planning a massive expansion that would destroy another 13,500ha of the Northern Jarrah Forests.

To stop this devastation we need your support. Join us at 5.30pm Saturday 9 December on the steps of Parliament House as we welcome our fierce forest defender after his long trek and show the state government that the community won’t stand for the clearing, mining, and destruction of our native forests.

Bring a personalised placard and your best chants!

State and federal laws have failed to protect the Northern Jarrah Forests. Mining companies have gone left unchecked, with Alcoa completing none of its required rehabilitation, mining in Reservoir Protection Zones and piping toxic waste over a dam—risking the region’s water supply!

Please come along as we call for the protection for the iconic WA Jarrah forests and the dire need to protect them from Alcoa’s destructive mining practices.

Right now the EPA is considering assessing Alcoa’s operations for the first time in history. Together, we will call on the state government to safeguard the Northern Jarrah Forests against the threat of mining by:

  • Halting Alcoa’s clearing while any EPA assessment is undertaken.
  • Creating a network of new national parks covering the remaining forest ecosystems across the Northern Jarrah Forests.
  • Implementing robust and effective protection of forests, water, wildlife, cultural values and community interests. This means the tangible, secure protection of these values from any clearing.

We are undertaking this action as part of End Forest Mining, an alliance of many groups, representing tens of thousands of people, and growing. We are calling on the Cook Government to end forest mining and protect WA’s magnificent forests in National Parks.
