Alcoa are proposing to expand its mining operations and clear over 8,000 hectares of forest over the next decade in the Northern Jarrah Forest. This area is a world biodiversity hotspot- more than 8,000 animal and plant species call these forests home—80% of which are found nowhere else on Earth, including the iconic numbat, mainland quokka, and Ngolyenok / Carnaby’s cockatoo.Â
But the nature we love is in serious trouble. The Northern Jarrah Forests are already on the brink of collapse due to climate change, these expansions would only increase the destruction of critical forests habitat and drive species to extinction.Â
We urgently need to protect this biodiversity hotspot from mining expansions and prevent further extinctions, and provide a fair say to communities, not just corporations, to end the rampant destruction of nature.
Alcoa's expansion proposal is currently under assessment by the EPA but Alcoa has applied for a clearing permit for "preliminary works" that could start in just weeks, even before the EPA has assessed its mining plans. It is crucial that Alcoa do not get permission to begin clearing until the EPA has properly assessed the full impact of their proposal.
The Jarrah Forest needs your help! Join us on the 28th July to send a clear message to Alcoa and the government to stop expanding mining operations in critical habitat and avert an extinction crisis. Together we can stand up for nature and preserve these precious forests for future generations.Â
